The biochemistry research group studies environmentally friendly bioprocesses and food processes, developing them applicable for industrial-scale production. The research strategy is to combine biosciences, for instance biochemistry, with fermentation and food technologies as well as with engineering sciences to achieve critical integration in process development.

Processes that enable the production of biocomponents for renewable fuels from lignocellulose are central to the research, the focus being on renewable transportation fuels and grid energy storages.

Food development and food processes form another research entity, with the goal of combining healthiness, safety and natural processing. The side-stream approach and recycling are also at the forefront of attention, the goal being to make the utilisation of raw materials more efficient.
